Please note that 8th grade students need to report to the Auditorium by 11:35 for the Principal's Assembly
6th grade Advisory time for today: 11:28-11:55
7th grade Advisory time for today: 11:28- 12:05
Teachers, note the extended lunch times today. Please be sure to walk students to the lunch area and reinforce our lunch time procedures
Lunch ends for all at 12:47 today

1. Take Attendance
2. Do a quick "get to know you" name activity-some options here
  • Group ball throw-say names as fast as you can-then you must say the name of the person you throw the ball to
  • Two truths and a lie about self (don't forget to state name)
  • Name alliteration-say your name and a personality trait that starts with the same letter or sound as your name (i.e. Super Sally, Curious Chris, Dynamic Drew)
  • Commonalities-put students into groups of 4-5, challenge them to come up with something they all have in common within a minute. Then they introduce themselves to the rest of class with their commonality
3. Review the Lunch Procedure Powerpoint

Period 7 End of Day 1 Activity:

For the last 20 min of the first day of school, we want to reinforce the community culture here at iMiddle. We would like students to take a few minutes to reflect on their first impressions and first day of the 2015-2016 school year, and then spend some time building community and relationships.
  • In the first ten minutes, please have students reflect on the day by creating a hi-five. Have students trace their hands on the provided copy paper and add in the following statements:
1. The best part of my day was...
2. It was challenging when...
3. I am SUPER excited about...
  • After allowing 5 min or to complete their hands, have them share their "hi-five" with a partner and/or discuss their first day as a class. Students may decorate their hands if time permits.
  • When the discussion is done, please collect the "high fives" to return to the Counseling Center (after class).

  • For the last 10 min of the day, please allow students to get to know each other in a fun way. Some options are below. Feel free to bring your class outside, play music, etc. We want to end the day on a positive note and leave them excited to come back tomorrow.
    • Have You Ever-this game is similar to musical chairs but can be done standing up. It's helpful if you have a piece of paper (8 1/2 x 11 works) that every student, except one stands on. Place the papers in a circle, but have one person in the middle, without a paper. The person in the middle starts the game with "Have you Ever" and then says something that is true to them (i.e. Have you ever been to the beach?) Anyone who has also done what is stated must move to a new spot in the circle, at least one spot away from where they were previously. The person who does not get a spot in the circle is the new middle person and does the "Have you Ever" statement next (Just remind students to be appropriate in our statements!!)
    • Desert Island- Explain to the group that they are all about to be left on a deserted island. Fear not, they are allowed to take three things with them (cannot be other people). After a few minutes, ask them to share what their items would be
    • Got You- Everyone stand in a circle with their hands down by their sides. Everyone puts their left palm hand facing up, and everyone puts their right index finger straight down (ie. pointing down), very close to the neighbor's left palm. When the teacher says the word "GO" the students must grab the finger of the person next to them, while not letting their finger be grabbed.
    • Paper Airplane-Everyone makes a paper airplane and writes their name and two questions to ask someone else.
On cue, everyone throws their airplane around the room, picks up others’ airplanes, and keeps throwing them.
    • The leader says stop after one or two minutes.
    • Everyone must have one paper airplane.
    • They must find the owner of the airplane they have and answer the questions on the airplane.
Each person then introduces the owner of the airplane they have to the group

For all grades: Please make sure every student has a planner. If you have extra planners in your room, please send them over to the CC asap. If you need planners, please send a runner, with the # of planners needed, to the CC. Thank you!

For 6th and 8th graders: If you have completed the Parent Portion of your PAC (Personal Accountability Card) already you will be let out early to lunch today!! Congrats and thanks for following our iMiddle Expectations!

Advisory teachers: please be sure to check that the PAC information has been completed prior to letting students leave early. Those students who do not have it complete may do so now, but will not be let out early today.

6th grade:

1. After attendance, watch the Friendly Faces at iMiddle Movie (see the link or embedded video above)

2. Time for team building!! Here are a few possible activities. Feel free to use your own!
  • Human Knot - students stand in a circle, put both hands into the circle and grab random hands (cannot be the hand of a person right next to you). The point of the game is to "untangle" the knot without letting go of each others' hands.
  • Do you have a hula hoop in your room? Pass the hula hoop! Students stand in a circle, hands held and try to get a hula hoop around the circle without letting go of each other
  • Create a story together: Students sit in a circle and teacher begin the story. Each person adds a sentence to tell an awesome tale.
  • Group Juggle: Materials needed: 3-4 small objects (ball, eraser, stuffed animal, etc). Have students stand in a circle. Start with one object being tossed. The first person should call out the name of the person they are tossing the object to and so forth. Once the first item has been caught by every person, introduce the second object and say that they must toss the first and second object in the same pattern that was just done during the first round. Introduce more objects as needed in a "juggle."
